MYTHS OR NOT?

Updated: Jul 11, 2023

India. Indians. I am an Indian from India. Yes, that intro was a result of me not being able to think of anything at all. I usually think of a blog idea and just start writing as soon as I reach home and get to my laptop but I literally wrote this blog yesterday just because I couldn’t get myself to write it down. Anyways, without further ado, I am going to start telling you guys what this blog article is about.

As an Indian, whenever I meet anyone from another country or even see any foreign reality shows which involve their contestants visiting India, I’ve noticed how they have certain thoughts and assumptions about the country and it’s people. This article is about whether those assumptions are myths or not. So, let’s get to it-

1. Elephants are really common on the streets= MYTH= It’s been a really long time since elephants could be seen on the streets on a daily basis. Now, we can probably just spot them in the jungles or in the zoo.

2. All Indians are brilliant at mathematics= MYTH= Though the education is hard in India and essentially more theoretical as far as the basic primary and secondary education is concerned, it doesn’t prove that all Indians are brilliant at maths because a lot of us(Indians) simply don’t like it or just can’t handle it (including myself).

3. India is not very safe= MYTH= I want to be honest with all of you and thus not glorify anything. Even though not all areas of the country are unsafe, it’s always better to be careful while walking alone at night or choosing which clothes to wear when you’re in a particular area or city. It’s always better to be safe than sorry but that does not mean that it’s completely unsafe to visit the country. A lot of places are really people-friendly and safe.

4. People are sensitive about their culture= REALITY= It is true, though not in the case of everyone. Considering that India is so populated, it has people with all kinds of ideologies but a majority of the people of the country love their culture and hence are passionate towards the same whether in a good or bad way.

5. It is always HOT in India= REALITY= Though “always” is an exaggeration, the temperature in India is comparatively hotter than a lot of other countries of the world. Most Indians prefer to stay indoors during summer just to prevent the terrible heat. The only exception to this weather is in the north of the country.

6. Marriage is mostly compulsory and arranged= SEMI-MYTH= I wouldn’t say that marriage is compulsory everywhere, though it is so in some smaller cities and most villages. People do prefer arranged marriage over love marriage in India though people have started becoming more and more open about this, especially in the major cities and towns.

7. Slums and poverty are very common= SEMI-MYTH= Yes, India does have a lot of poverty and slums but that doesn’t define India because there’s a lot more to the country than just that.

Those are some of the thoughts and assumptions I could think of and I hope you guys liked the article.
