THE PROM THAT HAPPENED
Updated: Jul 11, 2023
Prom. Passing chits across the room, planning intricate plans to prompose your crush, feeling the butterflies in your stomach before the response, deciding your prom dress, buying or getting corsages and flowers, dancing till your feet hurt, clicking super cute photographs, voting for Prom King & Queen. This is the Prom I always saw in Hollywood movies growing up. And this is the Prom I never thought I’d get to experience because we don’t really do Prom in most Indian schools.
We’ve barely even begun to accept students having boyfriends and girlfriends in school, so promposals are a long way ahead. But that’s not the point, atleast not of this story. The point of this story is, I went to Prom a few days ago(yay!).
One of my college classmates decided to organize a Prom for our batch and anyone else who’d like to join in and it was pretty much a really great, wholesome night. So, here’s the story of my first Prom.
It’s started with me and my friend realising how we barely have any chances of getting a date to discussion on who could ask us or rather who we could ask and then before we could get to a conclusion, the tickets were about to get sold out, so we just bought 2 stag tickets. We realized later that it didn’t really make a difference whether we had a Prom date or not, as long as we had fun and created the best memories we could(although we did prompose each other so that that dream of ours could get fulfilled in some way). Like our friend said in the Prom posters: “Self love, Best love”.
Then, came the most difficult part, deciding which dress would be our dream prom dress. I went with a gorgeous pink cowl neck dress with the prettiest, calm shine. That feeling when you know that that dress is THE dress, this dress was that dress for me.
On the day, me and couple of my friends decided to get ready together and make our grand entrance together(cuz we’re dramatic like that) and we did. From the chaotic energies of us getting ready to looking like absolute goddesses to toasting to how far we’ve come in the last 5 years now that college is ending to making our grand entrance to hogging the photobooth for a good 20 minutes(quite literally a “hum jaha khade ho jaate hai, line wahi se shuru hoti hai” moment), the beginning of our night was magical in its own chaotic way.
Then, came one of the most anticipated parts of the night: dancing till our feet hurt! And so we did dance till our feet hurt. We danced to songs we knew, to songs we had no idea existed, to songs we questioned why they existed, because all we wanted was to have fun. So yes, if you hadn’t got it till now, we danced till our feet hurt.
Even though all of this was great so far, my favorite part of the night was getting to meet all those people from college I hadn’t met for 2 years owing to the pandemic. It finally felt like home, the home college has become in 2019. I tend to get very emotional, and now that I’m about to graduate, that emotion is on a high note very often and so getting to meet all those people who made the last 5 years so magical, was truly amazing.
The rest was the usual: we danced, we drank juice, we ate, we talked about how tired we were to eat, we danced again, we clicked more pictures and we danced even more.
Oh, I almost forgot, we even had a Prom King & Prom Queen contest which I did put my name for, but hilariously so, didn’t get to take part in, because I was at the other end of the hall when they called out the nominees and I couldn’t hear them calling my name out to come to the stage about a hundred times. But well, atleast I tried(lol).
So, from clicking photos to dancing to singing our hearts out to screaming loud to communicate to getting flowers to meeting friends, it was a pretty wholesome night and an even more wholesome first & probably last Prom.
To Prom ’22, thank you for being the most wholesome night I could get before graduating.
